CHILDREN'S LESSONS

We use the Starfish Swimming program, a state-of-the-art, learn-to-swim program providing the finest learn-to-swim progression in the world. Using a simple progression teaching method, children are taught in small groups and move to higher skill groups as they achieve the advancement goals (Benchmark Skills) of their present group.  When asked what they like the most about FLOW Aquatics Swim School parents respond, "My child really learned to swim!"

The Starfish Swimming Curriculum consists of many different courses which vary by age and skill level, 4 of which we are currently offering:
  • STARBABIES (or Diaper Dolphins -DD) – ages 6mo – 36mo.  Parents will be in the water.
  • SWIM SCHOOL - Consists of 5 different color-coded stages (1-5), progressing the children from floating to swimming a basic form of freestyle.  Classes run for 30 minutes with a maximum of 4 children in a class.
Divided into groups by Age & Skill level:
                 •    Turtle Toddlers (TT) - 3-5 yrs.
                 •    Progressive Porpoises (PP) - 6 & up
  • STROKE SCHOOL - Consists of 5 different stages (6-10), introducing and refining technique of all the strokes, freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, then endurance of all 4. (45 min classes 1:6 ratio).  Divided into groups by skill level.
  • SWIM TEAM (non-competitive) - for those who have completed all 10 stages in our program, this is offered as a follow on to allow the children to keep enhancing the techniques they learned in Stroke School, work on endurance of these strokes, and start introducing them to concepts they would learn on a Swim Team.  In other words…great EXERCISE mixed with LEARNING and FUN!  (Currently 45 mins 1:8 ratio due to pool size.  In future will be 1 hr, possibly offered up to 2 times a week, ratio TBD).

Together, FLOW Aquatics & Starfish Swimming offer:

Safe and Caring Instruction

FLOW Aquatics owner and coach, Shannon Hamrick, is a certified level 3 American Swim Coaches Association coach with 22 years of competitive swimming experience, and 15 years of coaching experience with children, teenagers, and adults. Whether it's Shannon or one of her highly trained, trusted coaches, your children will have the same instructor every week for the entire session. While the coach becomes intimately familiar with your child's swim skills and personality, your child will get to know his/her coach well.

Small Class Sizes

With no more than four (4) children in each class, your child gets the individual attention he or she deserves. And with only one class being taught at a time, each child can focus on what's being taught, not on what's going on at the other end of the pool.

A Tailored Approach to Learning

Every student progresses at his/her own rate, independent from other students' development. Each child's strengths are developed and every child is supported in areas where extra help is noted and needed. With this tailored approach, each child feels success in some instructional area at the conclusion of every swim lesson, regardless of the swimming level currently attained.

Goal Oriented

We have well-defined lead up and benchmark skills that represent "graduation points" to the next stage in the system. By having five stages per school, your child's efforts are rewarded at every phase of the learn-to-swim progressions, which helps build their personal confidence in their ability to learn.

Technique Oriented

We are very concerned with teaching proper stroke mechanics from the very beginning. Correcting errors is a much more difficult process later in the developmental progression. Our coaches emphasize correct learning from the first lesson.
